plot: in the 1960's a young woman, susanna (played by my absolute favourite: winona ryder), a recent high school graduate she is jaded by the options that are laid out before her. she hates her parents and is sleeping with her high school english teacher. with no intention of attending college and having the feeling that her life is becoming too “dense” she decides to chase a bottle of aspirin with a bottle of vodka.. a little stunt that gets her sent to Claymore; a hospital for the mentally ill.
it's based on writer susanna kaysen's account of her 18-month stay at a mental hospital.
not only does is touch on important issues such as mental health and depression, it is shot from a female's perspective and I think for its time (the movie was released in 1999), the depiction of gender roles and the need for females to stick together was done so well.
